Mattaliano Furniture creates timeless, sophisticated, and impeccably crafted furniture. Its pieces are handcrafted in the U.S., by skilled artists and craftsmen using luxe, authentic, and often innovative materials and techniques. Exquisitely executed details maximize the luxury of every piece. Customization is a Mattaliano strength; only material choice and imagination limit the possibilities of its bespoke designs. Mattaliano’s roots are in the early 20th century when the Mattaliano family founded the Wells Furniture Company. Revered for its fine workmanship, it was used by many of Chicago’s top architects and interior designers to fabricate custom designs. In the late 1930s, Mies van der Rohe used Wells to manufacture his Barcelona chair. Wells continued making these historic chairs until Mies sold the production rights to the much larger Knoll in 1953. As a young architect with Booth, Nagle, Hartray in 1978, Darcy Bonner was introduced to Mattaliano and worked with them on many projects. When Bonner founded his own practice in 1980, Darcy Bonner & Associates, he continued using Mattaliano to produce work for DBA’s clients. But as his firm’s interior design division grew, two developments changed for Bonner and Mattaliano. First, much of the ingenious mid-20th century furniture DBA was importing from France for their clients’ homes was not scaled to their needs. That inspired Bonner to reproduce public domain archival designs for them. Second, Bonner found he had a passion for designing furniture and started producing his own work. He bought Wells Furniture Company from the Mattaliano family in 1994 and changed the name to pay homage to its founding family. Today, Mattaliano’s ever-expanding oeuvre is still rooted in creating timeless, impeccably crafted furniture. While its pieces were initially inspired by the 20th century, today they transcend period design to deliver the ultimate in fabrication, function, and design for 21st-century luxury buyers.
